Robot “Orizuru” acquires echocardiographic images (basic cross section) of the heart for diagnosis.
Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Japan. Early detection is important because early treatment significantly improves survival rates. However, in rural areas, early detection of heart disease is difficult due to regional and intra-prefectural disparities in mortality from heart disease.
The Iwata Laboratory at Waseda University is developing Orizuru, an echocardiography robot that can acquire echocardiographic images of the heart for use in the diagnosis of heart disease. Orizuru will be installed in community hospitals and other facilities to provide echocardiographic examinations, enabling people to self-check their hearts for 100 years of operation.
